The Nanfeng Kiln, built during the governance of Emperor Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty (1506-1521), has a history of more than 500 years. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit.
The Nanfeng Kiln is the oldest wood-fired dragon kiln in the world that has been continuously used. It was transformed from the "Wen Kiln". Due to its advanced technology, it quickly became popular in the industry. Its total length is 34.4 meters and its internal length is 30.87 meters. The kiln built on a hillside has the dragon-like body which descends from the sky. Local residents call it "Dragon Kiln". In addition, its kiln mouth is just facing the south, and the kiln tail is surrounded by banyan, with the cool breeze in every summer, so that the "Nanfeng Kiln" gets its name.
The Nanfeng kiln is old yet vibrant, and has been producing continuously for 500 years. The production cycle of the dragon kiln is three days:
On the first day, the potter puts the clay body into the kiln through the five kiln doors on the left side of the kiln. Because the kiln is very long, the potter may put them at different places according to different products, and then seal the kiln door with fire bricks.
On the next day, the potter ignites the kiln and burns it with large firewood for 12 hours. The temperature in the kiln gradually rises to 900-1000 degrees Celsius. This process is called "squeezing fire". After 12 hours, the potter stops the burning on the head of kiln, and instead adds the firewood on the back of the kiln. This process is called "adding fire". There are many "fire eyes" on the back of the Dragon Kiln, which can be used by the potter to observe the fire and add firewood. It takes 6 hours for the potter to add firewood to the back of kiln, and the temperature in the kiln can reach 1300 degrees Celsius. Throughout the burning process, the potter relies on his own experience to determine the temperature of the kiln, thereby determining the speed, time and amount of firewood. It will last about 30 hours. After the Dragon Kiln slowly cools down, the potter opens the kiln door and takes out the finished products. This process for three days from the putting, burning and finishing is commonly known as the "three-day firing".
In addition, when working in the Dragon Kiln, the potter often wears special shoes to protect his feet because of the heat. The special shoes are the sandals. The thick bottom of the sandals can be well insulated and anti-skidding. When the products are taken out, they are still very hot, so that the potter will use this kneading cloth to protect the hand while he holds the products.
