Lin Family Hall was built in the Ming Dynasty, originally as the family temple of the Lin family. In the period of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, the three brothers Lin Shaoguang (Scholar in the period of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty), Lin Longguang (Township Examiner in the period of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty), and Lin Yiguang (Township Examiner in the period of Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty) rebuilt the temple as a residence, commonly known as the "Lin Family Hall". This is a typical Lingnan ancestral house and residential building combined with a deep ternary structure, connecting small courtyards, chambers, and lofts.
The first thing at the entrance is a door, which is called the "middle door". It is a door of geomantic omen. This door will be opened only to greet the respected guests or in festivals, and it is usually closed as a screen that does not allow the outside person to see the house at a glance. Then it is the patio, which is opened to ventilate and illuminate because the windows were not often opened at ancient times. The ancient residents highly focused on the geomantic omen, so they built a patio to gather wealth. When it rained, the wealth of the four sides fell into their houses, which was "keeping the goodies within the family".
The second space is the living room. This beam structure is called "Lotus Beam". The wooden tenon is used in the entire house, without any nail. The house has been still strong after many years!
The third space is the main hall. The left and right sides are the room and the side hall, and the second floor is designed with wooden floor with a small and exquisite layout, which is the daughter's room, the lady's boudoir. This building is quite a lot of thought. There are various wood carving decorative elements, such as screens, flower stands, piers, partition fans, sparrow braces, etc. The appropriate layout makes the building simpler and elegant.
